Auckland Council is now officially five years old, a significant milestone and a good time to reflect on how much has been achieved.
The strong foundations laid by the former Waitākere City Council are now being felt around the region.
A couple of highlights: Waitākere’s ground-breaking community development model is the base of Auckland’s new community empowerment framework. We have succeeded in ensuring the Northwestern motorway gets its much-needed bus lane.
Aucklanders are enjoying the new north-west developments and we have combined a number of district plans into one Unitary Plan to achieve a compact city with great urban design, based around a strong public transport system (again following the west model).
It’s been a challenging five years and there is still much to do but have a very happy birthday, new Auckland. You are a fabulous city.
