Auckland couldn’t operate without the goodwill of thousands of people who volunteer to help with all sorts of community activities, from tree planting to dog walking, from taking tickets at events to fighting fires and beach safety. In this preview of International Volunteers Day on 5 December, OurAuckland tells their stories.
What I love about HURRAH! Dog rescue
Q&A with Chrissy Clements, volunteer at HURRAH
Chrissy Clements shares her experience of volunteering for the Humane Rescue, Rehabilitation & Rehoming Charitable Trust (HURRAH), the council’s partner in dog de-sexing campaigns.
Q: What do you love most about volunteering?
A: Most? It’s hard to list just one thing. Volunteering has introduced me to some really fabulous people. I get to meet and help some of the most worthy (and adorable) companion animals, and the gratitude expressed by families who have benefited from Desexy Revolution has been astounding, not to mention heart-warming.
HURRAH is a small, independent charity, but I know that we make a positive difference for Auckland's community.
Q: What made you choose HURRAH? What makes it especially appealing?
A: HURRAH is a deeply personal project for me. I love dogs. That so many are mistreated and unwanted is heartbreaking. I founded the Trust in 2013, with the aim of it becoming a 'gold standard' in dog rescue.
Q: What personal qualities do you need to have to volunteer for this?
A: Passion, compassion, an open mind, pragmatism, a willingness to listen and to learn, positivity! You can learn everything else along the way.
Q: What advice would you have for people thinking of getting involved?
A: Do it! Volunteering is a fun and easy way to explore your interests.
Q: How can people get involved with HURRAH?
A: There are many ways you can help HURRAH:
- fostering
- adopting
- volunteering at our mass de-sexing clinics
- fundraising
- flyer distribution
- donating
- dog walking
- home inspections
