Murals bring splash of pride

The Gallaher Park clubroom walls have been given a colourful makeover thanks to murals from local artists.

Manurewa Local Board and the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust, with support from Resene, ran a competition for sports-themed designs that could be painted on the clubroom.

The final designs were by Manurewa High School students and include images of a rugby line-out, Sir John Walker, and a range of sports activities with cultural flavours.

Murals will help reduce graffiti

Local board chair Angela Dalton says as well as making the park more vibrant, the murals will help reduce graffiti and vandalism.

“Right across Manurewa we’re working with community groups like the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust to boost pride in our local facilities,” she says.

“The community definitely has a stronger sense of shared ownership when people are involved from the start in the design and delivery of these important projects.”
