Auckland-based artist Bev Goodwin drew inspiration from buoys bobbing on the sea in Sicily, Crete and Greece to create her Sculpture in the Gardens exhibit.
She fashioned her own ‘girl’ buoys – Aurora, Bella, Aphrodite, Olympia, Sofia, Persephone and Minerva – from recycled items.
“I was struck by the similarity and likeness of the buoys to dancing women on the waves,” she said.
“I immediately thought of ancient civilisations, when there were many goddesses about the land, and on the sea, weaving their magic.”
Bev is a multimedia artist who has had numerous solo exhibitions in New Zealand and Italy.
Her works have appeared in exhibitions including Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens, Outside the Square, NZ Sculpture OnShore, The Big Egg Hunt and Sculpture by the Sea (Australia).
Bev is running a ‘Girl Buoy creations’ workshop for kids aged 10-14 on Wednesday 20 January at the Gardens. Spaces are limited, call the visitor centre on 09 267 1457 to book.
