Whau Local Board has provided funding to cut down on the use of herbicides at local community gardens. Instead of herbicides, mechanical means will be used to remove weeds at several locations.
This initiative follows from a priority in the local board plan to protect the environment. “Our board has received requests from community organisations to control weeds in local parks and community gardens by using mechanical methods, rather than by spraying chemicals,” says Whau Local Board Chair Catherine Farmer.
“I’m pleased that we have been able to fund more ecologically friendly methods for weed control at a number of locations.”
Mechanical weed control will be used at Manuka Park, and the following community gardens: EcoMatters Community Allotments, the eastern edge of Riversdale Reserve, Riverbank Road Community Garden, La Rosa Community Orchard and Orchard Reserve.
