The Northcote town centre, renowned for its great choice of food outlets, is ready for a significant redevelopment after the approval of the over-arching plan for the project.
Auckland Council’s Development Committee last week approved a High Level Project Plan for the upgrade which aims to improve amenities in the town centre and connections to local homes.
North Shore ward councillor George Wood says Northcote residents have been keen to see their town centre revitalised.
“Plans to improve the town centre have been on the cards for a while now, so it’s great there’s finally a mandate to deliver.”
That mandate has been given to Council-organisation Panuku Development Auckland which aims to deliver housing and commercial developments that strengthen the community and reinforce the local character.
“Northcote is a vibrant, multi-cultural town centre and it’s important that the redevelopment gives the community more of what they love about Northcote,” says Wood.
He adds that while it’s very much a long-term project, Northcote residents will start to see improvements over the next few months.
“We understand that this development is not going to happen overnight, so it’s encouraging to see that Panuku will tackle some quick wins. They’ll work with the retailers to improve signage, tidy up external storage areas and get some licks of paint.”
