Here's some advice from our experts on how you can reduce the risk of graffiti vandalism around your home and neighbourhood.
- Have zero tolerance for graffiti vandalism
- Remove graffiti vandalism immediately
- Report graffiti vandalism immediately to Auckland Council on 09 301 0101
- Paint your wall or fence a dark colour – it’s easier to keep graffiti-free because any further vandalism can be painted over
- Retain any unused fence paint in case you need it to cover graffiti vandalism
- Remove graffiti vandalism from unpainted walls or fences by sanding or water blasting - protect the driveway and footpath from paint drops with a cloth or cover
- Fresh graffiti may be removed using methylated spirits, turpentine, paint stripper, graffiti removal products or even oven cleaner - test first on a small area and remember the chemicals in graffiti removal products can be hazardous so always wear protective clothing and a mask and store chemicals out of children’s reach
- Prickly plants (e.g. roses, bougainvillea) can form effective barriers outside ground floor windows and balconies – but avoid blocking a clear view of the building from surrounding buildings or creating places for potential offenders to hide
- Avoid using plain, smooth surfaces on fences – if you can, use textured or rough surfaces that make it difficult to apply graffiti
- Keep your property well maintained.
Graffiti vandalism (tagging) is a community issue which can lower property values and encourage more vandalism and other types of crime. A strong community response sends the clear message to those involved that tagging will not be tolerated.
