With its black sand beaches, distinctive coastal villages, rugged coastline and expansive bush, the Waitākere Ranges area has long been a destination for filming.
Filming activity in the area is increasing, following recent growth in Auckland’s screen sector. Between July 2015 and February 2016, 34 filming activities were permitted in the Waitākere Ranges Local Board area.
MTV fantasy series The Shannara Chronicles used Te Henga / Bethells Beach for filming, and popular Australian TV drama 800 Words has returned to film a second series in Piha and Huia.
“We welcome filming in our area,” says Waitākere Ranges Local Board Chair Sandra Coney. “It celebrates our unique landscapes but doesn’t leave a footprint. It also brings economic benefits, with productions often making use of local catering, transport, crew and extras.”
The board approves permits to film on local parks and beaches. Find out more information about filming in Auckland.
