A passion for place

A word from Councillors John Watson and Wayne Walker

Across the Albany Ward there is a wonderful variety of special communities and landscapes. Many residents have passion and care for ‘their place’ and put a lot of effort into their community.

We think it’s important for everyone to get behind and support ‘the local’ in our community. Buying local helps support local businesses. It can make a real difference to the success and vibrancy of the entire community. At the same time, it provides local employment, and, because more people are able to work close to where they live, it reduces traffic.

These days you can get involved in your community quickly and easily through the websites, Facebook pages and Neighbourly pages of our many community groups.

Some examples are: the Campbells Bay Community Association, Sustainable Pāremoremo, Hobsonville Point Residents Society, Greenhithe Residents Association, Rothesay Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association, Herald Island Residents and Ratepayers Association, Ōrewa Ratepayers and Residents Association, Whangaparāoa Residents and Ratepayers Association and the Okura community. One size doesn’t fit all. Community groups develop to meet the needs of their communities. There are many interest groups that link people across the Albany Ward, for example, Cycle Action, Forest and Bird and the Kaipātiki Project.

As councillors, we find these groups are a great help for connecting Albany Ward’s diverse areas and getting feedback on local issues. We welcome opportunities to attend meetings and events. It’s your community.

The more you put into it, the better it’s going to be.
