A little before 1am on 27 July, the shell of ‘The Lighthouse’ by Michael Parekowhai was lifted into position on Queens Wharf.
It was picked up by barge from a site in Wynyard Quarter, where a team of builders has been working to create the house-like exterior form of the artwork for the last few months.
The move went extremely well, with perfect calm conditions and an expert team coordinating things. It was quite a sight to see a two-storey structure quietly motoring down the harbour.
The work will now be secured on the wharf, the staircase fixed and scaffolding built up around its sides.
Then a tile roof will go on and the scaffolding will be wrapped, allowing work to continue on the interior and exterior aspects of the artwork over the next few weeks.
We’ll be able to confirm a completion and opening date soon.
