More people walking on K’ Road

Publish Date : 08 Sep 2016

A survey by Auckland Transport (AT) shows an increasing number of pedestrians using Karangahape Road.

The survey measured the number of pedestrians at several K’ Road locations on a weekend at noon in 2015 and compared this with 2016 numbers.

All locations surveyed showed more pedestrians in 2016 than 2015. The biggest increase was observed on the intersection of K’ Road and Pitt Street/Mercury Lane.

Perception different to reality

This finding contrasted with business owners’ perceptions of how people had travelled to the area. AT asked K’ Road business owners how they thought people travelled to their shops. On average, business owners estimated that 41 per cent of people had travelled by car to K’ Road, much higher than the 17 per cent actual figure.

Upgrades on the way

Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency are working on a project to upgrade K’ Road. It includes the creation of a cycleway and enhancements to the footpath and road environment.
