Okahu Bay playground review
The fantastic Okahu Bay playground is just 300 metres from the beach.

We’re taking a look at some of the best playgrounds around Auckland. This week: Okahu Bay Playground, Ōrākei Domain, just off Tamaki Drive, Ōrākei

This week we visit a playground that really gets into the seaside theme with a proud waka as its centrepiece.

This is a great place to stop off and play that'll suit all ages, with a wide range of equipment – including a basketball half court for older kids who might be 'too cool' for swings and slides.

The playground is just 300m from the beachfront, with a grassy area buffering it from the road.

What's on offer?

Sited on land owned by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, the playground celebrates Māori heritage with carvings in the waka-shaped tree house.

The tree house has a thatched roof, a telescope and rope climbing nets up the sides. From it you can spy on a second tree house across the playground.

The flying fox and a basketball half court sit alongside other favourites like climbing frames and slides of different sizes.

Easy access

The playground offers good accessibility, including a ramp in the junior play area.

If you're planning on bringing something to eat, there’s a barbecue and picnic tables, as well as some shaded areas, a drinking fountain, and public toilets.
