Auckland Council is encouraging residents to love their leftovers throughout November with a series of workshops, competitions and community events promoting the Love Food Hate Waste campaign.
Food waste is a massive issue in New Zealand. This is particularly true in Auckland where, our wastage is higher than the national average. The average family in Auckland is wasting $574 worth of food a year – that’s equivalent to about three supermarket trolleys full of food.
Enjoy community events
Auckland Council is supporting community-led events throughout the city this month. Fancy learning how to budget, plan, preserve or learn more about the food waste issue? Check out the full schedule of council supported Love Food Hate Waste events in Auckland.
See it for yourself
Re-using leftovers is so easy to do and you can find loads of inspiration at lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz
Check out our pop up event at Britomart on Wednesday 9 November to try out some of these ideas yourself. We’ll be giving out compost cookies and showing off some of the great things you can do with those leftovers lurking at the back of your fridge.
We’ll also have massive towers of wasted bread to demonstrate the scale of the food waste issue. Aucklanders waste over 15,000 loaves of bread per day – that’s enough to cross the Harbour Bridge three times!
The talented catering students at AUT will offer up some great inspiration in the form of dishes they have made from wasted food.
Friday Fridge Challenge – be in to win!
We’re also running a challenge to spark your creativity in the kitchen. Each Friday in November on the Auckland Council Facebook page we’ll post a fridge full of random leftovers and it’s up to you to make scrummy recommendations.
Come up with the best idea that week and you’ll win a fantastic prize pack to help you make the most of your food.
There will be four winners (one per Facebook post) who will each win a special Love Food Hate Waste prize pack complete with blender, River Cottage Love Your Leftovers recipe book, bread tags, food huggers, freezer trays and use-by stickers.
