North Shore Ward councillors Richard Hills, left, and Chris Darby enjoy an early morning journey on one of the new double-decker buses.

In response to surging public transport demand, Auckland Transport has increased peak time bus services in several areas, including Kaipātiki.

In February, four double-decker buses were introduced on morning peak routes between Beach Haven and the city.

“These improvements are the result of a phenomenal uptake in public transport from Beach Haven and Birkenhead residents,” says North Shore Councillor Chris Darby.

“Double-decker buses will help reduce overcrowding, and result in fewer passengers being left behind during peak services.”

Double-decker buses will soon be added to routes between Glenfield Mall and the central city, once intersection works have been completed on Glenfield Road.

“After strongly advocating for double-decker use along Onewa Road while on the local board, it’s fantastic to see these services in action,” says Councillor Richard Hills.

“The new buses are a significant improvement for public transport users. They’re more comfortable and spacious, and offer great views from the top deck.”
