Update 1 June. 7:45am
The Waitākere Refuse Transfer Station is operating as normal following a fire on 31 May.
Auckland Council's pollution investigations team is working closely with the Fire Service to minimise any runoff into the estuary.
The Henderson animal shelter next to the transfer station was not impacted in any way – the fire was located on the opposite side at the back of the refuse centre and although there was lots of smoke, the shelter was not evacuated and all pets and staff are fine.
