A major cycleway link
This major cycleway will link the New Lynn train station, Avondale train station, Waterview Shared Path, and the North Western Cycleway and city centre networks.
It will also connect to Te Whau Pathway, eventually providing a cycling link from Te Atatū to Green Bay. This provides a walking and cycling route between the two town centres, largely following the railway corridor.
The final stage of construction will be an underpass connecting Chalmers Reserve to the western side of the railway line. From there, the path continues through a housing development and along St Georges Road.
The shared path will finish at New Lynn train station on Memorial Drive.
Construction of the shared path
Auckland Transport (AT) is working with KiwiRail to ensure that the shared path’s construction is carried out safely.
Whau Local Board Chair Tracy Mulholland is thrilled that the project has reached this stage.
“Once the cycleways are connected they will provide a strong incentive for people to get out of their cars and explore the environment,” she says.
The shared path is funded by Whau Local Board, AT and the government’s Urban Cycleways Programme.
