The floodwaters have long since receded in New Lynn, and now a new boardwalk and pocket park have been built on the previously flood-damaged area.
After 12 months of work to restore a culvert to improve flood resilience, a 114-metre boardwalk now connects walkers and cyclists to the park. The new boardwalk opens up the Rewarewa Creek’s stream and bush views to the public and also offers opportunities for business exposure to adjacent properties.
The pocket park is on Great North Road between Clark Street and Rata Street in New Lynn. The boardwalk connects Great North Road to McNaughton Way.
The new pocket park has great views, bench seating and areas for child play, all kept safe by lighting and video surveillance. More planting and landscaping will be done to improve waterway quality and encourage inanga spawning.
Whau Local Board Chair Tracy Mulholland says the board worked alongside Healthy Waters and New Lynn businesses to ensure the rebuild improved the environment and water quality while creating a fantastic public space.
