Birkenhead’s main street improvements project has just been completed in time for summer.
The area surrounding Birkenhead town centre’s roundabout intersection now has wider footpaths, more planting and improved public open space – making it safer and more enjoyable to visit.
There is also a new deck and seating under the Norfolk Pine tree, along with new street furniture, paving, and brighter street lighting.
Kaipātiki Local Board Chair John Gillon says he pleased to see the works completed ahead of Christmas.
“The lead up to Christmas is a critical time for retailers and shoppers, so we’re very pleased that this fantastic new public space is ready to be enjoyed over the coming summer.”
“We’re also happy that the project was able to incorporate the Norfolk Pine into the design and that it has been delivered on time and within budget,” he says.
“I’d like to thank all our local businesses and residents for their patience and understanding during construction."
"We’re pleased to see these works completed and look forward to car parking being reinstated at the Rawene Road carpark next year.”
The Birkenhead Town Centre Association is providing local musicians at the Norfolk Pine platform on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout December.
“For those who haven’t visited Birkenhead in a while – now is the perfect time to walk through and see what has changed,” says Gillon.
This Birkenhead main street project was the final project in a series of improvement projects funded and delivered by Auckland Council and Kaipātiki Local Board over the past three years.
Preceding revitalisation projects included the construction of Kaimataara ō Wai Manawa – an award-winning, split-level viewing platform boasting views of Auckland's only inner-city rainforest, and the boardwalk connection between Le Roys Bush and Birkenhead Town Centre.
