The Tāmaki Path is a 3.6 kilometre shared pathway that runs between Panmure Wharf and Pt England Reserve along the Western banks of the Tāmaki Estuary.
Work is on track for completion in early 2019 and an official opening celebration is planned for March or April 2019.
The original plans for the Tāmaki Path included a section that crossed Point England Reserve joining up with Kotae Road. Residents near Kotae Road pushed back on the location of the path and so Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board chose to pause plans for the construction of that section of the path until an agreeable alternative could be agreed upon. It has now been added to the Waiotaiki Nature Reserve track renewal project, which will be open to consultation later in 2019.
A resolution was passed at the November Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Business Meeting to approve the conversion of a temporary road into an extension of the Tāmaki Pathway. This road which was originally only used by contractors working on the Tāmaki Path, and crosses paddocks before joining up with Kiano Place provided a cost-effective means of completing the northern end of the path.
“This opportunity meant that we were able to provide a completion to the pathway that would serve the users until the final sections are complete,” says board chair Chris Makoare.
“Because we were able to move on this opportunity so quickly, the solution has been a cost-effective one.”
Local resident Chris Lysaght notes that “we and our immediate neighbours, are delighted to hear that the proposed permanent extension of the Tāmaki pathway through to Kiano Place is going ahead.
"As the regeneration of our neighbourhood continues and more people enter our community, the convenient access to recreational areas, such as the wonderful shoreline of the Tāmaki River, will become even more important.”
