Dave Pizzini might be the new face on the Manurewa Local Board but the recently-elected board member is no stranger to Manurewa - a community his family has lived in for generations.
“I have lived here for more than 18 years, but my wife was born and grew up in Manurewa and we are raising our children here. We love the diversity and everything Manurewa has to offer, I am delighted to be joining the local board, which is already doing some great things to move our community ahead.”
Having admired the work of the board from the sidelines, Dave is honoured to now be a member of the group guiding decisions for Manurewa.
“I think this board has been very courageous and innovative and has the interest of the community at heart, so I am excited to now be a part of that and to give something back to this community.”
For a former police detective with a 34-year career in the force, it’s not surprising that ensuring community safety is something he is keen to tackle in his new role but he is also an avid sportsperson who says it is important to him that the community has easy access to quality sports facilities.
Manurewa Local Board chairperson Angela Dalton says Dave’s experience in the police and the wider community is a welcome asset to the board.
“Dave has the commitment to Manurewa that is necessary. He really cares about the community and its wellbeing, and I’m looking forward to the valuable contribution he will make in his new role”.
Manurewa has a lot to offer
And when he is not working, playing, refereeing or coaching sport, Dave makes an every effort to get out and enjoy what Manurewa has to offer.
“It’s too easy to look at what is wrong with Manurewa but we have some of the best off-leash dog areas in Auckland, the wonderful Botanic Gardens and Totara Park, Weymouth Beach, the coastal walkway alongside the Manukau Harbour, great local shopping centres, and people who look out for each other – we’re pretty lucky.
And his favourite local spot?
“Walking through Totara Park on one of the bush tracks by the Puhinui Stream is my happy place. It’s just so tranquil and peaceful.”
Mr Pizzini will be formally sworn in to office on 15 March.
