Unsworth Reserve is getting a makeover to make it more appealing and inviting to a wider age group.
An improved playground has just been installed, featuring new swings and seesaws, as well as a new climbing play module suitable for slightly older children.
A new FIBA standard 3x3 basketball court, suitable for all school-age children, is under construction next to the new playground.
Weather permitting, it will be completed and ready for use in June this year.
The new court was funded by Upper Harbour Local Board, which is keen to increase active recreation opportunities for young people in Upper Harbour’s parks and reserves.
“Over the years, we’ve been told by our youth representatives that basketball is very popular and we could do with more courts,” says local board chair Lisa Whyte.
“That’s why we supported this one, and the recent court builds in Albany and Pin Oak Reserve.
“We have also committed funding to replacing the old basketball hoop in Whenuapai at Malcolm Hahn Reserve, and installing a new one on Herald Island next to the hall.
“Hopefully both of these will be completed by the end of this year,” says Whyte.
