All six lanes of Great North Road in New Lynn near the intersection of Clark Street were opened last week.
“I’m so pleased to see the road fully open in New Lynn. It will really help local businesses and commuters,” says Whau Local Board Chair Tracy Mulholland.
“The resurfaced road and the wider, upgraded footpaths really make a difference to the flow of the area.”
Upgrades to roads and footpaths
Heavy rain in March 2017 caused significant damage to Great North Road and adjacent property. A decision was made to upgrade the road and footpaths from the culvert site up to Titirangi Road to improve access in the area.
This followed work to renew the original culvert and install a new, larger culvert with 10 times the capacity of the original, which was completed in December.
To enhance the town centre, work is also being carried out to open up Rewarewa Creek and its banks to public access and to create a new pocket park over the new high-capacity culvert outlet on the north side of Great North Road overlooking the creek. The park will include planting and seating.
There will also be a boardwalk that will run along the Rewarewa Creek bank to McNaughton Way and a shared path that joins the boardwalk to Great North Road.
The footpath upgrade on the south side of Great North Road involved removing poor quality brick pavers and matching it to the footpath throughout the New Lynn town centre. Sections were also widened to provide better access for users including people with prams and mobility scooters.
The footpath on the north side has also been renewed and widened to create a shared cycle and pedestrian path.
Better lighting has been installed and traffic islands have been realigned to improve vehicle flow and traffic management.
Completion in September
“We will hold a public celebration to mark the completion of the pocket park and boardwalk. This is likely to be in September,” says Tracy.
“We look forward to the opportunity to thank everyone for their patience and to celebrate the improvements.”
