Albert-Eden-Roskill Councillor Cathy Casey has won first prize in the ‘People’ category of the 2018 Tiritiri Matangi Island Photographic Competition with a picture of Mayor Phil Goff and fellow Councillor Linda Cooper.
Councillor Casey took the award-winning picture in early March as part of a mayoral visit to the island with the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi, a volunteer group focused on the protection and conservation of the island.
Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi projects include the introduction of rare birds onto the island, like the kokako, and the development of information signs for visitors regarding native plants and historical events.
Judges acknowledged that Councillor Casey was a “Johnny-on-the-spot and has captured a great image of the Mayor enjoying his day on the island”. They were also impressed by the arrow on Councillor Cooper’s tee-shirt which “diverts our eye back to the main subject.”
Councillor Casey says, "We had a wonderful trip to the island, learning about various volunteer projects. I took many more pictures of birds than people so I am thrilled that my photo of the mayor was credited with an award."
A selection of the winning photographs from this year’s competition will be featured in the Tiritiri Matangi Island calendar for 2019.
