Kids can run, jump, climb, dig and enjoy water play at a new playground that recently opened in the Manurewa suburb of Weymouth.
Manurewa Local Board Chair Angela Dalton joined local children and their families to officially celebrate the opening of the playground located in Kaimoana St, which was followed by a community day and barbecue.
“The kids were having a ball and our local board was really proud to be part of being able to make it a reality for this community,” she says.
“What’s great about this playground is that it is something a bit different. A lot of the features incorporate the landscape so as well as being fun, it is also challenging and caters for a wide range of ages.”
Reflecting its location near the shores of the Manukau Harbour, the play space is themed on the gathering of kaimoana (seafood) which can be seen in the shellfish motifs on some of the structures.
Features of the playground include:
- Large rope climbing frame
- Large koru-shaped sandpit
- Shade sails
- Raised pathway and dirt mound play area
- Water feature
- Slide, swings, seesaw and a spinner.
The project, which is located within special housing area known as Waimahia, was partially funded by growth funding and topped up by the local board.
More fun places to play on the way
There has been plenty of comment about the disparity of investment in playgrounds across the Auckland region; in Manurewa, the local board is backing several projects which will delight children and their whānau.
The board recently approved the concept plans for a new playground in Randwick Park, which has been designed by the local community. Construction is expected to start later in the year.
The neighbouring community is also helping to design a playspace in Keith Park and another playground funded by growth funding has just been completed in Eugenia Rise, a new residential housing area.
