Instead of throwing out items you no longer need, try to turn them into something else.
You can find inspiration and maybe a few things you’ve been looking for at the Upcycle Market hosted by Beachlands Community Trust this Saturday 1 September.
The Upcycle Market runs once a season and brings together artisans who create upcycled products out of used materials.
Jenny Carter, CEO of Beachlands Community Trust, says, “The Upcycle Market has emerged at the right time, where our community has an appetite to make a positive difference to our environment.”
Upcycling is the process of transforming waste materials or unwanted products into new items and helps to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
“It’s a great way to bring innovation and entrepreneurs together to effectively divert waste from landfill and repurpose it,” says Carter.
Beachlands Community Trust started as a gathering place in a historic local log cabin, aimed at connecting and looking after the community. They have evolved into putting on various workshops and meetings in multiple locations.
They also host The Remakery, which runs on the second Saturday of each month. This eco-market showcases community members with all different kinds of zero-waste expertise, so others can learn and have fun.

Applications open 1 September for grants of up to $50,000 from Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund (WMIF).
If you’re a business, iwi/Māori, or an education or community group with a project that will help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, you could be eligible to apply.
