Gareth Shute is one of the Auckland Library Heritage Trust research scholars for 2018. For his research project, he is creating an online map of all the music venues that have existed in Auckland since the early 1900s for the NZ music history website audioculture.co.nz.
Shute hopes to find both information about, and images of, these venues through his time researching at Auckland Libraries; however, many of music venue locations, bands and people in the images are unidentified.

Through displaying and identifying these images, Auckland Libraries hope to reunite the people in the images with their family, extended family and other people known to them. They will also add to the description on the record for locations and dates.
Preserving Auckland Libraries' heritage collections
The research scholar programme was established by the Auckland Library Heritage Trust in 2013 with the aim of raising the visibility of the extraordinary collections held in Auckland Libraries Sir George Grey Special Collections. It has supported up to two researchers each year working across the diverse collections from eastern manuscripts to local Auckland newspapers from the 1920s.
There are many fascinating historical items that are carefully preserved and protected in Auckland Libraries' extensive heritage collections – from photographs to rare books, maps and music, and much more.
