Future scientists, architects and nurses are among the recipients of Manurewa Local Board’s Rangatahi Youth Scholarship who are excited and ready to take the next step in their academic journey.
Twelve recipients aged between 14 and 24 received scholarships of up to $2000 that will go towards financially supporting their further education this year. These youngsters have shown leadership potential and have contributed towards volunteer activities during the past year.
The recipients say that they are grateful for the opportunity and support that Manurewa Local Board provides to young people each year and aim to use their skills for the betterment of their community.
For Thomas Trevilla, 20, who is pursuing Bachelor of Urban Planning (Hons) degree at the University of Auckland, the scholarship will contribute towards his course fee, computer hardware, equipment, software and materials for model making and presentations.
“Pursuing tertiary education is certainly challenging in terms of time, effort and money. This scholarship will help me cope with my student loan and the other costs of completing my degree,” says Trevilla.
“As I look towards my career, I hope that I can use what I have learned to improve the future development of our city and the communities in which we live.”
Manurewa has one of the highest populations of youth under the age of 24 in Auckland and supporting young people has always been at the heart of the board.
Rangatahi Youth Scholarship Spokesperson and Manurewa Local Board member Sarah Colcord says that this goes a long way in supporting our next generation achieve their dreams.
“This scholarship enables our youth to get the training, education or equipment they need in their journey towards reaching their potential.
"By helping these students, the local board is helping to shape the future of our country.”
Manurewa Ranagatahi Youth Scholarship supports students not only with their tertiary education but also to develop leadership skills by attending vocational training, workshops and conferences etc.

- Suliana Tongilava - NZ Diploma in Tourism at International Travel College
- Julia Ducivaki - Bachelor of Science- first year at University of Waikato
- Ben Haurua - Further studies in Te Reo Maori
- Wenda Poleo - Health Sciences degree - first year
- Isabelle Hunt - Health Sciences degree- first year at AUT
- Aaron Lew - NCEA Level 2
- Thomas Trevilla - Bachelor of Urban Planning (Hons) degree at University of Auckland
- Elmira Booth - Spirit of Adventure voyage
- Annelise Karanga - Learning Te Reo Māori
- Analina Namoa - One-week Jazz educational workshop at Victoria University, Wellington
- Catherine Siilata - Tourism course
- Teresa Kosetatino - Bachelor of Nursing at AUT
Applications for funding for a project or activity can be made once in every financial year.
