The days of the southern motorway splitting Papakura are numbered.
The Southern Corridor Improvements project is moving towards competition later this year.
As part of the project, motorists have watched a pathway that will eventually link the middle of Papakura, via an overbridge to Pescara Point and beyond, taking shape.
Papakura Local Board Chair Brent Catchpole says the proposed Elliot Street to Pescara Point pathway is a great opportunity for the district, with residents now able to provide feedback into the plan.
"The path will feature a new overbridge reconnecting the town to Pescara Point and Karaka, with road connections to Great South Road and Brylee Drive that will mean access to the harbour and reserves in the area.
"It’s going to be a wonderful asset and there is still time for people to have input into what the pathway looks like. You can build a pedestrian path at two metres for instance, but a shared path would need to be much wider.”
Manurewa-Pakuranga Councillor Daniel Newman says the path is a big win for the area
"It will be a fantastic amenity for locals, who will be able to walk or cycle right through to Takanini, along the harbour.
"I’m grateful to NZTA for delivering the overbridge alongside what will be a significant piece of transport infrastructure."
As well as the shared path, the motorway project includes more lanes to ease congestion and remove bottlenecks, and the upgraded Takanini interchange.
