Increasing the size of a multi-sports pavilion at Millwater’s Metro Park East has been endorsed by Hibiscus and Bays Local Board.
The Metro Park Community Sports Charitable Trust requested the building’s footprint increase by nearly 40 per cent from 286 to 400 square metres to accommodate multiple sports codes and groups, additional changing rooms and storage.
The building will be used by athletics, cricket, football, hockey and rugby codes and board chair Julia Parfitt says it has become increasingly clear that for it to be fit-for-purpose and future-proofed it needs to be bigger.
“Already this sports park is popular and well-used with many sports codes and groups, all running various sports and programmes here. For now, several containers are being used to store sports gear and equipment.
“It’s obvious that our sports clubs must have indoor space that functions well, that can be shared, and with enough storage space for their equipment.
"It is good to see how the groups are working together and collaborating on plans for this space."
The pavilion is an essential addition to a park which also includes hockey turfs, cricket nets, sports field lighting, an athletics track, walkway and public toilets.
It will house four changing rooms, an umpire changing room, four uni-sex toilets that are externally accessible, storage space, a social area, a medical room, tuck shop space, a small control room and a deck with seating.
Tipped to cost between $1.4 million to $1.6 million, funding for construction is yet to be confirmed and will have to be secured from various sources.
The trust will apply to the board for a community lease to develop and occupy the building.
