Manurewa children with disabilities will be able to have fun close to home after Keith Park playground goes through a major upgrade later this year.
This will be Manurewa's first inclusive playground providing wheelchair access and playing equipment for children with disabilities.
The new concept plan has been designed by Manurewa residents. The local board consulted directly with the community, spoke with local families with children with disabilities, and sought further input from the wider disability sector.
More than 80 per cent of all equipment will be wheelchair accessible. Features include accessible pathways, two new accessible toilets, accessible drinking fountain, climbing activities, and a new seating area.
Manurewa Local Board approved $250,000 extra funding for the playground renewal. The play equipment will include a trampoline, seesaw, swings, carousel, musical play, bespoke tower with tube slide, interactive panel and bridge. The play area will be fully fenced.
Manurewa Local Board member Joseph Allan says that this project aligns with the local board’s vision to make Manurewa more access friendly.
“Our local board has been advocating for inclusive facilities for Manurewa. We want our community to be able to enjoy their local facilities equally and this is one step further in that direction.
"I am sure people are going to love this park when it’s completed.”
The work is expected to start in October this year and be completed in February 2020.
