Forty-three young sustainability leaders participated in a three-day wānanga to take action for the Manukau Harbour during the April school holidays.
The Young Leaders Programme was delivered in partnership with the Manukau Harbour Forum, Auckland Council and Mana Whenua. 50 per cent of students who took part were from those local boards which make up the Manukau Harbour Forum: Franklin, Māngere-Ōtāhuhu, Maungakiekie-Tāmaki, Manurewa, Ōtara-Papatoetoe, Papakura, Puketāpapa, Waitākere Ranges, Whau
Participants of the young leaders wānanga enjoyed an array of activities, including a full day immersion of Māori perspectives at Makaurau Marae.
The wānanga also included a trip on the Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari to connect with marine biodiversity, participation in hands-on action projects at Ambury Regional Park which involved conservation of seabirds, marine and fresh water quality testing, pest monitoring and trapping and mobilising others for collective environmental action.
The final day involved students creating their own visions for the Manukau Harbour and developing action plans to make a difference for their local waterways, harbours and coastlines.
The young leaders were empowered by sharing their ideas and getting feedback from a range of community partners including Manukau Harbour Forum Chair and members.
Sustainable Schools are now supporting the students to implement their actions by connecting them with new and exciting sustainability opportunities.
