Papakura Local Board allocated $29,000 in grants funding to local groups in its latest funding round.
The board’s community grants budget for the financial year is $129,000, allocated via three small grants rounds and two local grants rounds.
The board made the following grants:
- Auckland Seniors, $1000 towards venue hire
- Papakura Historical Society, $3000 for exhibition costs
- Papakura High School, $500 for arts and culture costs
- Papakura Business Association, $2500 for Matariki flags
- Church of Samoa, $2500 for feasibility study on hall for Takanini
- South Auckland Performing Arts, $1500 towards venue hire
- Well Women Franklin, $1200 towards venue hire
- Life Education, $2000 for programme costs
- South Auckland Choral Society, $1500 for performance costs
- Papakura Marae, $2500 for Christmas at the Pa
- Papakura Theatre Company, $2000 for Legally Blonde
- Asthma NZ, $1000, for nurse educators
- Papakura Potters Club, for $500 venue maintenance
- Papakura Māori Wardens $5000 towards van purchase
- Ardmore Air Training Corp, $2500 for camping equipment.
The board faced requests for almost $165,000 in its latest grants application round but had $29,000 to allocate.
"Our applications were from groups working hard in the community delivering all sorts of things of enormous value, socially, culturally and economically. But we are having to turn good people away," says Papakura Local Board member Katrina Winn.
Board chair Brent Catchpole says $165,000 in applications but less than $30,000 to respond to the need shows more funding is needed for community grants.
"Our entire budget still could not meet that $165,000 demand," he says.
