A new playground and other improvements are on their way to Grey Lynn's Home Reserve thanks to funding given by the Waitematā Local Board.
The local board is allocating $383,000 in total to the project which, as well as new play equipment, will see new pathways, seats, picnic tables and native planting added to the park at the bottom of Home Street.
David Batten, a committee member of the association, says it’s pleasing to see a concept come to fruition that parallels changes in the makeup of the Grey Lynn community.
“We’ve seen an influx of young families and until this point places to safely play and congregate have involved travel to the fringes of our community or to Grey Lynn Park.
“Finally we have a family friendly space and more importantly a focal point where our community can meet and play,” he said.
The project will also lift the profile of the reserve which currently sits below the surrounding Home and King streets. The level of the basketball court will be lifted, and an area of road will be added to the reserve with new trees planted to create a more welcoming entrance.
$325,000 of funding will come from the local board’s Community Facilities 2019/2020 work programme and the remaining $58,000 has been sourced from the local board’s Locally Driven Initiative Capex budget.
The Grey Lynn Residents Association provided feedback on the draft concept to ensure the final design reflected community aspirations and desires for the reserve.
