Modern technology is continuing to bring Howick’s heritage to life.
Howick Local Board has extended its heritage walk app to cover three new heritage walks - a Main Street Stroll through the village centre; the Tāmaki River Tour and the Bucklands Beach Loop.
The app features historic images, video and commentary on points of interest along the three walks, which are all suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.
The Main Street Stroll commentary details the area’s colonial history and development, and features noted local historian Alan La Roche recounting anecdotes and stories behind some of the landmarks, as the walk winds past significant sites. The walk features a map and an audio feature for those who only want to listen to the stories, as well as heritage images.
The Tāmaki River Tour also features video and audio as walkers travel along the 9km Pakuranga Rotary Shared Pathway on the banks of the Tāmaki estuary, from Ōhuiarangi / Pigeon Mountain in the east to the Panmure bridge in the west. There’s also helpful information on biking the route and bus options for return travel.
The Bucklands Beach Loop again features video, including on the Musick Point radio station, and the two-and-a-half-hour walk takes in the suburb of Bucklands Beach and the peninsula with its spectacular views. The walk has points of historic interest along the way and even details ways the more adventurous can carry on by ferry for downtown Auckland or Waiheke Island. The full loop is around 10km long but a 6km loop is also featured.
