Tamariki will get a safer ride thanks to the efforts of Māori Wardens.
Papakura Local Board has made a $4000 grant to wardens based at Papakura Marae to fund a child safety restraint programme.
The wardens plan to target marae events and police operations to provide advice on the type of child restraint best-suited to whānau.
They will also share practical knowledge on how to correctly fit restraints and demonstrate how to use them properly.
Child car seats will also be fitted in the wardens’ van, so it can be used to transport families that police might not allow to drive their own cars because they have sub-standard, or no seats at all.
Wardens also plan to work with police and Auckland Transport to become child restraint technicians.
