Whangapouri Stream is in for some love as part of the Litter Free Franklin project.
Making use of $15,000 in funding from Franklin Local Board, the project aims to help address illegal dumping and littering that is affecting waterways, with the Whangapouri Stream in Pukekohe a focus this year.
Board chair Andy Baker says the stream was selected for special attention last year because of its importance to the town and proximity to schools.
On Saturday 30 November, Auckland Council, the board, Healthy Waters and the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust will join community members to clean up along the banks of the stream in a bid to prevent discarded items and litter reaching the waterway.
Anyone who wants to participate is being urged to meet at at 17-25 Montgomery Avenue at 9am, with gumboots or closed footwear, although gloves will be provided.
“It’s a great chance for locals to demonstrate that the stream is important to them, and it’s an ideal event for families,” Mr Baker says.
Children must be accompanied by an adult, and while the event runs from 9am to noon, participants do not have to commit to the entire three hours, and everyone is welcome at a barbecue and family activities after the clean-up.
