Where is the best burger in all of Auckland?
Te Toro locals will argue it’s to be found at their very own Awhitu Peninsula community hall, although it's only open once a month when locals and visitors alike swoop for a taste of the fundraising treat.
Franklin Local Board member Matthew Murphy manned the barbecue cooking patties and Sharlene Druyven put the burgers together in the kitchen this month, as locals got through almost 100 of the monster burgers.
As well as a great chance for locals to get together, the regular event helps raise money to keep the hall in action.
“It’s a great event. Locals get together at the hall and enjoy each other’s company over a burger, and there are kids running around everywhere and playing table tennis. It’s like country New Zealand from years ago,” Matthew says.
“I had the Holy Cow burger, and it was enormous. You know you’ve had a good burger when you almost need a shower when you’ve finished.”
The novel approach to hall fundraising had Sharlene pondering her career path.
“When I got on the board no-one told me I’d end up flipping burgers. But fair play to Te Toro. They’ve combined raising money with a community event that also brings people together. It's great fun.”
