Waiheke coastguard given a lifeline

Waiheke Volunteer Coastguard has received a helping hand from Waiheke Local Board.

During a recent storm on the island, a mooring line holding the Coastguard’s boat broke, placing the vessel at risk of damage from nearby piles and passing boat traffic.

Waiheke Local Board has supported the Coastguard with funding from their Quick Response Grants programme to replace all the mooring lines.

Brendan Demchy, Waiheke Volunteer Coastguard President, says damage to the boat would mean repairs and time out of service for the vessel.

“We’re approaching our super busy period which means the mooring line has to be replaced by Christmas.

“Our boat’s other mooring lines are also past their used-by date and needed to be replaced,” he said.

Local board chair Cath Handley says supporting community volunteers, especially those doing lifesaving work like the Coastguard, is something that the board is passionate about.
