Concept plans for the redevelopment of Kevan Lawrence Park, Massey Park and Centennial Park playground have been adopted by Franklin Local Board.
Plans to develop the Waiuku playgrounds began in 2018, and because all three are close to the town and only about 10 minutes from each other, the board wanted plans that ensure community use and ongoing sustainability is maintained.
Waiuku board representative Sharlene Druyven says consultation and engagement events were held with iwi and stakeholders, including community groups and residents, and feedback from those has informed the plans.
Kevan Lawrence is on about 5000 square metres, and is well-used, sitting close to the library, Plunket and a retirement village. It has established paths, open space and mature trees.
Massey Park has easy access to the newly refurbished skate park. On about six hectares, it includes sports fields, toilets and a community hall and playground that is currently in the upper western corner about 200 metres from the skate park, toilet and basketball facilities, which leads to a lack of use.
Centennial is the most central park. On about three hectares, it is also home to other facilities such as the Whiteside Pools, a kindergarten, and the Waiuku River. Its playground is on a large hill hidden from view when driving pass on Kitchener Road.
“Feedback showed overwhelming support for retaining and renewing all three playgrounds,” Druyven says.
“Safety and access are concerns and residents told us they want better sightlines, connectivity and accessibility, so four key themes were identified - more interesting equipment for all ages and abilities, better access by relocating playgrounds, improved safety and security and more seating and shade for families.”
The work will eventually cost more than $700,000 - $370,000 at Massey, $250,000 at Kevan Lawrence and $95,000 at Centennial.
