Papakura station’s leaky lifts are being repaired.
The shafts let water in, which has occasionally led to the lifts being out of service.
Auckland Transport has told the Papakura Local Board work is under way.
Contractors are working on the lifts one at a time, with work involving new roofs, canopies, and a small concrete wall at ground level to improve lift reliability.
The first shaft to be fixed services platform 3, and when work is completed, contractors will move to the central lift servicing platforms 1 and 2.
Each lift may need to be out of service while work is undertaken, possibly for as long as five weeks, but Auckland Transport is working with contractors to see if work can be completed in a way that allows the lifts to remain open as much as possible.
Board chair Brent Catchpole says the lifts are vital to the transport network. “We want to encourage people to use the trains so that vehicles are taken off the road. That means it is critical people who are less physically able can access the trains.”
He says wayfinding signage has been in place and AT ambassadors are on the station platform to answer questions and provide information, Wednesday to Friday.
