More than $35,000 has been allocated to community groups by the Puketāpapa Local Board through its grants programme in October.
The grants cover a range of activities across support for seniors and youth, promoting environmental protection and awareness and encouraging creativity.
Puketāpapa Local Board Chair Julie Fairey is glad the local board was able to provide this local community support in a tough financial environment, saying
“The value of the positive impacts from these grants is indisputable. Our community will gain opportunities to encourage creativity, protect our environment and improve their well-being, through the great work of these local groups.”
Budget cuts and limited funding has meant that not every organisation that applies for funding receives it. The local board’s grants programme is typically over-subscribed each year.
Organisations that can demonstrate that their work and activities align with the outcomes and priorities of the local board make for strong applicants and are more likely to receive funding.
Successful organisations in the latest grant round include the Mountains To Sea Conservation Trust who will run programmes for students at Wesley and Waikowhai Intermediate to experiencing marine reserves, the Roskill Together Trust for money towards the ‘Puketapapa Business Voice’ website development, Friends of Wairaki Stream to be able to purchase traps (possum and rat), bait and promote their work through printing flyers and Dance Therapy NZ for funding workshops at the local Roskill Youth Zone in early 2021.

The local board also made two 'multi-board' grants. Groups that work across more than one local board areas can apply for funding through these grants.
Babystart Charitable Trust received funding towards creating care boxes including clothing, blankets, towels and mother and baby goods, and Auckland Softball Association Incorporated received funding towards operating expenses for the Association.
