Services for new parents through to young adults in West Auckland have been boosted following decisions by Henderson-Massey Local Board to award leases to three organisations in Te Atatu Peninsula and Te Atatu South.
Plunket, E Tipu E Rea Whanau Services and West Auckland Parents Centre Incorporated are to be awarded the five-year community leases for council-owned buildings in the two areas.
Te Atatu Peninsula
In Te Atatu Peninsula, the local board awarded leases for the two council buildings at Kaumatua Reserve on Te Atatu Road. It followed an expression of interest process where applicants were assessed using a tool to rate a range of criteria.
Plunket won the lease to occupy the community house to be a hub where people can be welcomed and supported through the delivery of Plunket services, expanding its current footprint to meet a growing demand in the area.
While West Auckland Parents Centre Incorporated will occupy the brick building. Its aim is to establish a space to expand its offering of parent education and support to the community and enable a more effective community support network. This will include the ability to increase the programmes offered and introduce further parent education.
Te Atatu South
In Te Atatu South, the top floor of the council-owned building at Lloyd Morgan Lions Club Park will be leased to E Tipu E Rea Whānau Services.
They will deliver services and initiatives with the aim of providing a comprehensive one-on-one wrap-around service for teen parents to be by empowering, connecting and building the whānau and wāhine Māori to be impactful and purposeful in their pursuit of attaining and maintaining their tino rangatiratanga.
Supporting families
Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair Chris Carter says that supporting families in a growing area is part of the board’s priorities in its Local Board Plan.
“Te Atatu has a rapidly expanding population with many families and young people making the area their home. These services will be very helpful and beneficial for people as the area continues to grow,” he says.
“It’s very satisfying as local politicians to be able to play a role in increasing the availability of these important family services in our local area.”
All leases will have five-year rights of renewal. A public notification process for the leases at Te Atatu Peninsula and iwi engagement for the lease at Te Atatu South will take place before being finalised.
