Lighting around the train station will be improved after Papakura Local Board allocated almost $70,000 to three projects in the area.
The other two projects are a new bus shelter outside Rosehill Intermediate and way-finding signage at the station.
The funds were the last available under the board’s Transport Capital Fund for the 2020-21 financial year. That fund allows the board to pay for relatively minor transport projects.
The bus shelter outside Rosehill Intermediate has been allocated $40,000, the way-finding signage at Papakura Train Station $11,000, and safety lighting in the laneways closest to the station $18,799.
Board chair Brent Catchpole says the bus shelter will cater for a high number of passengers from the school, providing a safer environment for those catching the school buses.
“Papakura Train Station has exits to the east and west and because the town centre and key public buildings are not visible, way-finding signage should be of great assistance to travellers.
“And it’s great to be able to bring forward work around improved safety lighting. A 2018 report identified issues near the town centre, including laneways with little or no lighting.
“We will be able to install modern lighting to a number of sites.”
The board has a well-connected area that is easy to move around as one its main objectives.
“Better lighting is going to make people feel more confident walking in and around the station and we want to do our part to support residents using the train to take cars off our streets.”
