This week public feedback has opened on a draft concept plan for Parnell’s Heard Park.
Located in the middle of Parnell town centre, Heard Park is considered the ‘heart’ of Auckland’s oldest suburb, with the draft concept plan aiming to provide a holistic design reflecting community needs and aspirations.
Auckland Council and the Waitematā Local Board have worked closely with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and Parnell community stakeholders to develop the draft concept plan for the park.
Waitematā Local Board Chair Richard Northey says the draft plan outlines long-term aspirations for the park, and that public feedback is needed to make sure it is on the right track.
“Our board wants to ensure that Parnell continues to be a fantastic place to live, work, play and do business.
“We worked closely with members of the Parnell community and mana whenua to develop The Parnell Plan which outlines the collective 30-year vision for the suburb.
“Revitalising Heard Park is one of the five key action areas identified in The Parnell Plan that will work to achieve this collective vision.
“We want to encourage greater use of the park and to further establish it as a key community space within Parnell,” says Chair Northey.
The board’s parks portfolio holder Adriana Avendaño Christie agrees and says she encourages Parnell residents and other Aucklanders to provide feedback on the draft concept plan.
“There are lots of ideas in the draft plan that aim to see Heard Park re-imagined as a dynamic civic space.
“Increased accessibility, a more inspiring play space, new artworks and better reflection of the cultural history of the site are just a few of the ideas presented.
“Let us know what you think and give us some ideas of your own. We need your feedback to help us make Heard Park great.”
Public feedback is now open until Sunday 4 July 2021.
