It’s time to shoot hoops at the new basketball half court located at Freyberg Park, Browns Bay.
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board officially opened the court on 29 May with a blessing and light refreshments for the community.
Deputy Chair Victoria Short says the new court is a slam dunk for basketball which is very popular in the bays.
“It’s exciting to open the first half court in the bays. All credit to former board member and keen basketballer Caitlin Watson for championing the project, and the previous local board and community for supporting it.
“Already, the court is popular with kids playing ball with their friends and for early morning training. It’s important our communities have access to quality park facilities and enjoyable places to meet, play and relax in.”
In 2019, council staff investigated various court sites before presenting Sherwood and Freyberg parks as the options for public feedback. Most people supported the Freyberg location as being near shops, public transport and other facilities for sports such as bowls, squash and rugby.
The $139,373 project saw the court, hoop, backboard, footpath, fence, bench and rubbish bin installed in December 2020, followed last month by landscaping.
