Eke Panuku has taken its next step in the fight against climate change, with the release of its new Climate Change Strategy: Te Rautaki mō te Huringa o te Āhuarangi.
The document lays out how the organisation will incorporate climate action into its neighbourhoods, asset management functions and internal business operations, and fully aligns with Auckland Council’s Climate Plan, Te Tāruke ā Tāwhiri.
As Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland is the largest city in the South Pacific, council-controlled organisation Eke Panuku’s actions around climate science cannot be prioritised enough. The strategy explains how new communities must be low-carbon and climate-resilient as standard, and comes after Auckland Council declared a climate emergency in 2019.
Priority actions include:
- The use of Life Cycle Analysis to measure, and better understand, the carbon impact of Eke Panuku developments.
- Accelerating sustainable procurement activity.
- Delivering a work programme to address climate impact across Eke Panuku’s asset management function.
- Working with Auckland Transport to explore mixed-use development options on underutilised transport sites.
The strategy declares that homes and other buildings built under Eke Panuku will be part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s net-zero carbon world in 2050. Eke Panuku neighbourhoods will see tree canopies and cycleways increased, all housing achieving minimum Homestar 6 rating, and all eligible commercial developments to achieve a 5-star Green Star rating.
Internal targets, meanwhile, include increasing percentage of Eke Panuku staff that commute by sustainable transport modes, reducing Eke Panuku office waste to landfill, and maintaining a 5-star NABERNZ energy efficiency rating for Eke Panuku’s head office on Wyndham Street.
