Memorial brass plaques are notes on local history and they make places more meaningful to local communities.
These plaques are often installed commemorating a grand opening of a facility, historical landmarks such as some of those on the local Three Kings Heritage Trail or acknowledging an influential figure within the community.
“Unfortunately, a recent spate of brass memorial plaque thefts from the Puketāpapa Local board area has forced Community Facilities to reconsider replacing such memorial plaques like for like,” says Justin Cash, Community Facilities Manager, Auckland Council.
Now, the brass plaques are made up of anodised aluminium rather than brass which will likely deter future thefts as the material is a mixed metal compound with low resale or scrap value.
“This material was chosen over plastic and it is coloured to replicate the look of brass without the cost and risk of theft,” says Mr Cash.
The local board is hopeful that this will reduce instances of theft and vandalism in our local communities.
