When Auckland is home, it can be easy to forget how incredible our region is.
So good, that iconic travel guide Lonely Planet recently declared Tāmaki Makaurau the best place to visit in 2022.
OurAuckland has been highlighting some of the amazing beaches, regional parks, maunga, public spaces and other attractions that you can visit around the city.
But what about the many local gems Auckland has to offer?
We’ve compiled a list of local walks, playgrounds, parks and other great places to check out as the weather gets warmer.
As Mayor Phil Goff says: “With lockdown restrictions in place, we are the only ones who can get out and enjoy it right now.”
So, get out, explore – and go local!
Roberta Reserve
Roberta Reserve located in Glendowie Bay near the beginning of Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve. Roberta Reserve boasts a lush greenspace and off leash dog area, a large, fenced playground and some of the best views of Tāmaki Estuary in the city.
Parking is ample and there are toilet facilities, this small Reserve is often overlooked by those walking the 2.6km Glendowie Park to Tahuna Torea Path, but it is in fact a local gem and a worthy destination picnic which spot you’ll find yourself visiting again and again for its ever-changing seascape and relaxed family vibe.
Dingle Dell Reserve
Dingle Dell Reserve in St Heliers is hidden haven where you will find a combination of short all-weather walking tracks that skim around the edge of the reserve or take you into the middle of native bush – without ever taking you very far. The tracks are of mixed accessibility due to some steep pathways and stairs, despite this the reserve does lead itself to a quiet stroll and has plenty of seat located throughout.
Dingle Dell is a beautiful mix of native bush, birdlife and moss edged streams, as well as grassy open spaces.
During lockdown, Dingle Dell was transformed into a colourful fairy village with hundreds of fairy homes popping up along the paths edge. Now tidied away, you can still find many of the long-term fairy houses nestled amongst the trees, you just need to look close enough.
Mangemangeroa Rotary Loop Path
The main entrance and car parking area is located at 108 Somerville Road, Howick. From here pathways lead through pasture to the main walkway. The walkway passes several fascinating features including a waterfall, mature and regenerating native bush, freshwater creeks, boardwalks over mangroves and mudflats.
