In February, Auckland Council will be seeking Aucklanders’ feedback on its proposal to move the Rodney, Waitākere, North Shore, Papakura and Franklin areas to the same collection and payment model for rubbish as Auckland and Manukau areas, in the next few years.

The proposal to move the entire Auckland region into a rates-based service for kerbside rubbish collections, with a choice of three bin sizes to accommodate different household needs, was endorsed to go to public consultation by the council’s Finance and Performance Committee on 8 December.

If approved, households that currently pay for their rubbish collection by buying a bin tag or bags, would instead pay through their rates. The change to the payment system for kerbside refuse collection would start being introduced in mid-2024 to be fully implemented by the end of June 2025. For those in Auckland Central and Manukau, rubbish collection is already funded through rates.

Residents in rural areas will have the option to use council rubbish bags under a rates funded system. The inner CBD, Waiheke, and Aotea Great Barrier Island will continue to have this option as well.

Rates-based services are believed to have the greatest potential to minimise waste and emissions. They are also more convenient and equitable for customers across the region.

Public consultation will open in February as part of the Annual Budget, and more details on how you can have your say will be released in early 2022.
