Māori tradition feature of playground design

The upgrade of a playground in Devonport playground will incorporate mara hūpara - Māori traditional play elements as well as sustainable materials.

The old playground at  Oliver (Kawerau) Reserve in Devonport is old an indeed of renewal with work getting underway in January.  Nearly all of the equipment will be made from natural materials of  As well as new play elements such as slides, tunnels and rope climb the design incorporates mara hūpara - Māori traditional play elements, including traditional log games. Natural shade will eventually be provided trees being planted in the area and there will be seating and picnic table.

The design features include:

  • sustainable materials,
  • plastic is avoided as much as possible
  • integration into the natural environment of the reserve;
  • incorporating māra hūpara / māori traditional play elements 
  • focus on climbing, sliding and swinging;
  • improved drainage;
  • picnic table and rubbish bin
  • native shade trees.

The design which included input with mana whenuna, was approved by Devonport-Takapuna Local Board in 2021.
